• Scale: How large is the conflict? Is this a skirmish between two competing villages? Or, is the conflict a border dispute between established kingdoms? Even larger yet, empires could be at odds for a variety of reasons.
• Cause: There has to be a reason or purpose for the fighting. Such as: resource scarcity, religious motivation, family disputes, ethic or racial disdain, grudges, divine intervention. Whatever the cause—it must be present.
• Environment: The physical environment will dictate much in the battle planning—for you and your characters. Mountains, forests, streams, and fields, will impact the actions and reactions of your characters.
• Duration: Larger campaigns will require more resources i.e. men, supplies (food, weapons, housing). This will impact the surrounding environment.
• Length: The battle preparation may be drawn out but the fight itself will be short by comparison. For example: Think about two men in a tavern. One man has been thinking ill of the other all night. You have spent a great amount of time building up why one man dislikes the other. Then, without prompting, the second man punches the first man—knocking him out. The fight is over.
• Scars: Using the scene above, the first man is going too feel quite a bit of pain. A battle will impact the people and societies involved greatly. There may be a victor in the conflict but there will be many families who will suffer.
• Preparation: The amount of time an army has to prepare and train will impact how it performs. A group of men who have had time to use weapons, train in various environments, and physically fight other people (or creatures), will behave differently than a group of farmers who have a reason to be upset.
• Luck: The unnamed farmer can kill a mighty warrior if something gets in the way.
• Vulnerability: All creatures and men are vulnerable to death in battle.

• Be a General – Draw a map of the battle. Then insert your character(s) into the battle. This will give you a greater ability to think about scene sequence and the much larger picture when you write the smaller scene sequences.
• Think Visually, Then Write– How actions occur will help you describe, in proper sequence, the specific movements of your characters.
• Point of View – A single character will be limited to their own vision and experience. This will provide a much more dramatic and personal experience for your reader. However, a single person cannot relate the details of the entire battle. Think of using a variety of characters to show the size and scale of your battle.
• Make it a Challenge – Your character has to struggle against the odds. The weather has to challenge the army. The environment has to provide a tactical challenge. The opposition has to be trained better and be well rested. These things can make a battle scene more interesting for you and your reader.
•  Pace – Description and dialogue can assist you, or hinder you, when creating a scene. Be realistic. There are no long, drawn out speeches when someone is trying to bash your character’s head with a mace. Your character’s thoughts will shorten. The action will be more tense and with greater significance.

Fight scenes have a mixed audience. Some readers want vivid detail and an impact which they will not forget. Yet some readers want to skip the chapter and hope their beloved character is not too damaged. Whether you love it or not a good fight scene is crucial for some characters. This is especially true for fantasy stories. If you name aloud a few fantasy stories (or movies) you will almost instantly visualize a crucial fight scene. The hero confronting the villain. The villain challenging an un-experienced hero. The lover instigating an argument to bring out the truth. Fight scenes, both verbal and physical, can be exhilarating.

They can be a challenge for the author.

There are a couple of things you should remember: The story must continue, your character reveals themselves through action, the reader must believe your story, and the confrontation must matter or your reader will not bother turning the page.

A scene, just like a story, must end--and have meaning. Fighting for the simple sake of fighting is excruciating and numbing. Too much action and your scenes become blended together and your reader, as a grocery cashier, moves on to the next scene.

If your character is hesitant to fight--it tells the readers something about your character. If your character relishes and dreams about the next moment he can hear his fists smash into his victim's ribs--it reveals a trait about your character.

Take a moment to read the prior sentence: "If your character relishes and dreams about the next moment he can hear his fists smash into his victim's ribs." Did you visualize anything? You should have. Your imagination is powerful. I did not have to give you exact details. I did not have to tell you which fist was used but you created the scene in your head. Keep this in mind when writing a scene. Too much detail can take away the momentum in your scene.

Which brings to mind the concept of pacing. How you write the scene will immerse the reader in the experience. Short, quick, and powerful, words will help you. Be an active writer. Use active language (i.e. verbs). The villain was not beat up. Your character, the hero, ran up to him and bashed him repeatedly with a staff. The hero stopped. Looked down, and spat. "It's over." Then walked away.

Do you see? The language and verbs made the scene occur quickly. Yet it was a powerful scene.

When you set up your scene you may use a moment to describe what is happening. Think like a cameraman and use your lens to place your characters and paint your setting. Then let your characters confront each other to deliver an outcome which your reader, and you, will enjoy.

Did I mention outcome? Yes. I did. Confrontation leaves its mark. Scars and bruises. Tears, anger, hatred, or fear. This brings to the front two things. First, emotions are a crucial aspect of conflict and showing the reader your character. Second, conflict is grounded in real human behavior whether you enjoy the thought or not. The emotion and realism make emotional and experiential connections between your character and reader.

To make the above connection stronger you must consider your reader's desire: a story they want to read. Don't stop interest in the story by creating a scene which is not polished. Do your research if you are uncertain about the details. You might try visualizing action movements before writing.

In some ways setting can be as important as the characters and conflict of your story. Quick research will provide you with four general categories: time, place, mood, experience/context. These topics will help you further develop your setting.

The first three topics give you a general backdrop to where, and when, your story is taking place. Below I have listed the primary categories of setting and listed a few other items to consider.

Mood
The mood, otherwise called atmosphere or feel, of the story is connected to the setting. Take one scene for example: Two armies clashing. Write this scene. Now let's visually explore different aspects of the background of the scene.

Imagine the following geographical settings:

1. Desert
2. Snowy Mountains
3. Marshland
4. Plains
5. Forested Hills

Now, add the following time of day to each:
1. Day
2. Night

Place these weather/climate conditions into the list:
1. Rainy
2. Snowy
3. Dry and Hot
4. Windy

By now you should have a lengthy list which inspires different reactions. Write what you feel next to each set of descriptions. Better yet, write how your character would feel.

Now ask yourself a couple of questions:

1. Is my setting in this world, the real world, or in an imaginary or new world?
2. Do I want to reveal my setting through characters and their experiences or do I want to tell my reader about the world?

Setting adds flavor to your story. A vibrant setting helps keep your reader engaged.

When writing a scene, story, chapter, or while writing a journal, you (the writer) need to make a choice as to what type of window your reader will experience the words you have written. This is academically categorized as point of view. There are several types:

First Person Singular: This type of writing uses, "I".

First Person Plural: This type of writing uses, "We".

Second Person: This type of writing uses, "You".

3rd Person Limited: This type of writing uses, "He, She, It", with one narrator used.

3rd Person Multiple: Also using, "He, She, It", but having multiple narrators (or characters). This type of writing uses chapter and scene breaks to allow the reader to know a change is occurring.

3rd Person Omniscient: Using, "He, She, It", and the narrator knows everything.

Objective Narrator: The detached observer, who does not know the thoughts or feelings of other characters.

Now you have a better understanding of the different points of view you may use in your writing.

Perspective, is how your character experiences, feels, thinks, and processes the events surrounding them. Experiences in the story are universal, perspective is unique to each character. Use this to develop your characters and conflict.
